When Illness Changes the Plan: Are Your Finances Prepared?

qtq80-0d2ViP

Most of us build our financial lives around one assumption that we rarely stop to think about:

Tomorrow, we will continue earning an income.

The mortgage will be paid. Groceries will be purchased. Children will continue their activities. RESP and retirement contributions will continue. Vacations will be planned. Bills will get paid.

Until something changes.

A serious illness or injury is first and foremost a health issue. But very quickly, it can also become a financial one.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Canada. For many families, cancer and other serious illnesses are not abstract possibilities — they are experiences that have affected parents,

spouses, children, friends and colleagues.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 8 women in Canada is expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime.

This article, however, isn’t about one particular illness.

And it isn’t about convincing everyone that they need another insurance policy.

It’s about asking a broader financial-planning question:

If illness or injury suddenly changed your ability to work, would your financial plan still work?

qtq80-Ple115

A serious diagnosis can change much more than your medical calendar

When we think about becoming sick, we naturally think about doctors, treatment and recovery.

But the financial consequences can extend much further.

Imagine one person in a household suddenly needs several months away from work.

The mortgage doesn’t stop.

Neither do property taxes, rent, groceries, utilities, car payments, childcare or debt payments.

Meanwhile, the family may face entirely new expenses.

Perhaps a spouse reduces their working hours to provide care.

Maybe there is additional childcare.

There may be travel to appointments, parking, medications or therapies, household help, or other costs that weren’t part of the family budget.

And even when the household can continue paying its bills, something else may happen quietly:

the future gets postponed.

  • RESP contributions stop.
  • Retirement savings stop.
  • Debt repayment slows down.
  • Emergency savings are depleted.

The family may get through the immediate crisis, but the financial plan they spent years building can be significantly affected.

That’s why protection planning shouldn’t begin with:

“Which insurance should I buy?”

A better question is:

“What would actually happen financially if my income changed tomorrow?”

Start with your financial safety net

Insurance is only one part of the answer.

Before discussing any insurance product, understand the resources you already have.

For example:

Emergency savings

How many months of essential household expenses could you cover without employment income?

Paid sick leave

Does your employer continue your salary for a period if you’re unable to work?

Employer disability benefits

What percentage of your income would they replace? When would coverage begin? How long could benefits continue?

Government programs

Depending on the circumstances, programs such as EI sickness benefits or CPP disability benefits may provide some assistance to eligible individuals.

Your spouse or partner’s income

Could the household function on one income — and would that person realistically be able to continue working at the same level while also supporting someone through a serious illness?

Other savings

What assets could you access without compromising another important objective?

This is essentially a financial stress test.

And sometimes the answer may be reassuring.

A family with strong savings, excellent workplace benefits, manageable expenses and little debt might be able to absorb considerably more risk themselves.

Another family with one primary income, young children and a large mortgage may be in a completely different position.

There is no universal answer.

Disability insurance: what happens if you can't earn your income?

One of the most important financial assets a working person has isn’t sitting in an investment account.

It’s their ability to earn money over the next 10, 20 or 30 years.

That’s the risk disability insurance is primarily designed to address.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada describes disability insurance as protection for situations where illness or injury prevents someone from working and earning income. The exact percentage replaced, waiting period, benefit duration and definition of disability depend on the particular plan.

Consider someone earning $100,000 per year with another 20 years of working life ahead.

Their future earning potential is substantial.

Yet many people insure their home, vehicle and even their phone without knowing how much of their income would continue if they suddenly couldn’t work.

“But I already have disability insurance through work.”

You might — and that’s a great place to start.

The question isn’t whether employer coverage is good or bad.

The question is:

What exactly do you have?

  • Understand things such as:
  • how much income would be replaced;
  • when benefits would begin;
  • how long they could continue;
  • how the plan defines disability;
  • whether other benefits reduce the amount received;
  • whether benefits could be taxable;
  • and what happens to the coverage if you leave your employer.

FCAC notes that many employers provide disability coverage, while the taxation of benefits can differ depending on how premiums are paid.

Knowing you “have benefits” isn’t quite the same as knowing what those benefits would actually do for your family.

Critical illness insurance solves a different problem

Critical illness insurance and disability insurance are often confused.

They are not the same thing.

Disability insurance is generally designed around the question:

“How do I replace some of my income if I cannot work?”

Critical illness insurance asks a different question:

“What financial flexibility would I want if I were diagnosed with a serious covered condition?”

Critical illness insurance generally provides a one-time lump-sum benefit when an insured person is diagnosed with a condition covered by the policy and meets the applicable policy requirements. Conditions and definitions differ between insurers and policies.

Depending on the family’s circumstances, that money could potentially help provide financial flexibility for things such as:

  • regular household expenses;
  • reducing debt;
  • additional childcare;
  • taking additional time away from work;
  • allowing a spouse to reduce working hours;
  • travel or accommodation associated with treatment;
  • modifications or additional assistance at home;
  • or simply protecting savings that would otherwise need to be withdrawn.

The important point is that critical illness insurance isn’t the same as replacing a paycheque every month.

That’s why understanding the problem comes before choosing the solution.

And where does life insurance fit?

Life insurance addresses another financial event entirely.

Instead of asking:

“What if I become sick?”

the question becomes:

“What happens financially to the people who depend on me if I don’t come home?”

Life insurance generally provides a death benefit to beneficiaries when the insured dies while qualifying coverage is in force. FCAC notes that the benefit can help families replace income, provide for dependants, cover debts and deal with other financial consequences of death.

Again, the starting point shouldn’t simply be:

“How much insurance should I buy?”

Instead, think about the financial obligations that would remain.

Would the family want to pay off the mortgage?

Would the surviving spouse continue working the same hours?

Would childcare costs change?

Would education goals for the children continue?

How much income would disappear?

For how long would financial support be needed?

Would retirement plans for the surviving spouse be affected?

Those questions determine the need.

The insurance product comes later.

Disability, critical illness and life insurance: three different questions

A simple way to think about the difference is:

Disability insurance

“What replaces part of my income if illness or injury prevents me from working?”

Critical illness insurance

“What financial flexibility would help me and my family deal with a serious covered diagnosis?”

Life insurance

“How does my family continue financially if I die?”

None of these questions automatically means you need a particular policy.

But they are different risks, and understanding the difference is important.

“Do I need all three?”

Not necessarily.

In fact, that isn’t how we believe protection planning should work.

A good financial plan doesn’t mean buying every type of insurance available.

It means understanding:

Which risks could I comfortably absorb myself?

Which risks would materially disrupt my financial plan?

What protection do I already have?

Where are the actual gaps?

For one person, building a stronger emergency fund might be the priority.

For another, an excellent employer disability plan may already address much of the income risk.

Someone else may have significant savings but still want life insurance because children depend heavily on their income.

A self-employed professional may face a very different situation because employer benefits don’t exist at all.

The right answer depends on the person.

A simple example

Consider a couple with two young children.

They have:

  • a mortgage;
  • RESP contributions;
  • retirement savings;
  • two incomes;
  • some emergency savings;
  • and basic benefits through their employers.

On paper, everything looks organized.

Now imagine one spouse develops a serious illness and cannot work for a year.

Several questions suddenly become important.

How much income continues?

How long does the emergency fund last?

Could the other spouse maintain their existing work schedule?

Would RESP and retirement contributions stop?

Would debt increase?

What happens after sick leave expires?

What if recovery takes longer than expected?

None of those questions starts with an insurance company.

They start with understanding the household.

That is what protection planning should do.

Self-employed? The conversation can be even more important

For self-employed individuals and business owners, protecting income deserves particular attention.

There may be no employer-provided disability plan.

There may be no paid sick leave.

And sometimes the individual is not only responsible for their household income but also for keeping a business operating.

If they stop working, revenue may stop as well.

That means a good review may need to consider both:

What happens to my family?

and

What happens to my business?

Again, the solution doesn’t necessarily begin with buying something.

It begins by identifying the financial exposure.

When should you review your protection?

Protection shouldn’t necessarily be something you arrange once and never revisit.

Your life changes.

Your financial responsibilities change with it.

A review may be particularly worthwhile after events such as:

  • getting married or entering a common-law relationship;
  • having a child;
  • buying a home;
  • taking on significant debt;
  • changing employment;
  • becoming self-employed;
  • starting or purchasing a business;
  • experiencing a substantial income increase;
  • losing workplace benefits;
  • or approaching retirement.

FCAC similarly recommends considering changing insurance needs as people move through major life events such as starting a family, buying a home or starting a business.

Sometimes the review results in additional protection.

Sometimes it results in changing existing coverage.

And sometimes the conclusion is:

You’re already well protected. No changes are necessary.

That’s still a valuable outcome.

Five questions worth answering today

You don’t need to purchase anything to begin reviewing your protection.

Start by answering:

1. If my income stopped tomorrow, how long could our household operate normally?

2. What disability and life insurance do I already have through work?

3. Do I actually know how those benefits work?

4. If I experienced a serious illness, which financial goals would be affected first?

5. If I died tomorrow, who would be financially affected and for how long?

If you can answer those confidently, you’re already ahead.

If you can’t, that’s where the conversation begins.

Final Thought: Protect the plan, not just the assets

We spend a lot of time planning for the things we want to happen.

  • Buying a home.
  • Sending children to university.
  • Building a business.
  • Travelling.
  • Retiring comfortably.
  • Investing for the future.

Protection planning asks us to spend a little time thinking about the things we hope never happen.

Not because we should live in fear of them.

But because a strong financial plan should be able to survive more than the ideal scenario.

At Merits, our approach is not to begin by asking which insurance product you need.

We start by understanding your family, income, savings, existing benefits, financial obligations and objectives.

Then we can identify whether there is actually a gap worth addressing.

Would your financial plan still work if your income suddenly changed?

If you’re not sure, we would be happy to have a conversation.

Our 20-minute Financial Planning Conversation is designed as an informal first step — no preparation required and no commitment to make any changes.
